One of the key strengths of The Holden School is our small class sizes. With a maximum of eight pupils per class, supported by a dedicated teacher and teaching assistant, we are able to provide the personalised support, encouragement and challenge that helps every child succeed. This high level of individual attention enables us to build strong relationships, respond quickly to pupils’ needs and create an environment where every child feels valued, understood and supported.

Our bright, spacious and flexible classrooms are designed to support a variety of learning styles, with dedicated areas for focused learning, collaborative activities and regulated downtime. Pupils also benefit from access to our large hall and outdoor spaces, allowing learning to extend beyond the classroom and providing opportunities for physical activity, enrichment and personal development.

Supporting Pupils with Autism

The Holden School provides specialist provision for pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), offering a structured and supportive environment designed to promote communication, independence and personal growth.

Our skilled staff use a range of evidence-based strategies, including visual supports and alternative communication approaches, to help pupils access learning and develop confidence in their social interactions.

Importantly, pupils accessing specialist autism provision remain fully included within the wider school community. They participate in enrichment opportunities, school events and appropriate curriculum activities, ensuring they feel connected, valued and supported throughout their educational journey.

Encouraging Positive Behaviour

We take a positive, proactive and nurturing approach to behaviour support, recognising that behaviour is often a form of communication.

Our pupils are supported to understand expectations, take responsibility for their actions and develop the skills needed to manage challenges successfully. At the same time, staff work closely with pupils to identify triggers, reduce anxiety and provide early intervention when difficulties arise.

Pastoral care plays a central role within our school community. Our dedicated pastoral team works alongside pupils, families and staff to ensure that barriers to learning are identified and addressed, helping every child feel supported, understood and able to succeed.

Celebrating Achievement

Celebrating success is an important part of life at The Holden School. We recognise and reward effort, progress, resilience and achievement, helping pupils to develop confidence and take pride in their accomplishments.

Pupils who meet their individual targets can access a range of rewards, including participation in afternoon enrichment activities and Golden Time. Friday enrichment sessions provide opportunities for pupils to experience new activities, develop interests and strengthen positive relationships with peers and staff.

Our Positive Behaviour Recognition System, combined with a trauma-informed approach, helps pupils develop self-regulation, build self-esteem and achieve their full potential. This approach is supported by our highly trained staff team and onsite therapeutic provision.

Giving Children a Voice

At The Holden School, we believe every pupil should feel listened to, respected and actively involved in school life.

Through our School Council and regular pupil consultation opportunities, young people are encouraged to share their views on issues that matter to them, from school routines and enrichment activities to wider developments across the school.

We value pupil feedback and seek to involve our young people in meaningful decision-making wherever possible. By giving children a genuine voice, we help them develop confidence, responsibility and the knowledge that their opinions matter.

Accelerated Reader

Reading plays a vital role in developing confidence, independence and lifelong learning. Through our Accelerated Reader programme, pupils are encouraged to read regularly, improve their comprehension skills and develop a genuine enjoyment of reading.
